Learning: Planting Sprouted Tubers

Photo 1: After placing the stake and digging a shallow hole we are ready to plant a tuber that is well sprouted. Note the growing sprout.

Photo 2: A good practice is to remove the lower leaves as shown. The places where these leaves have been removed will produce nice tubers when we dig in the fall. We are ready to plant.

Photo 3: Here we see the tuber placed correctly in the hole. The growing sprout is about 4 inches from the stake. The end of the tuber is lower in the hole than the growing end.

Photo 4: The planting is complete. Note the small amount of growth above the soil level. Water lightly just to settle the soil. As the plant grows be alert to tying to the stake. This will assure a nice straight plant.
